China's international operation center for the digital yuan has officially begun operations in Shanghai, the country's financial hub, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) -- the nation's central bank -- said on Thursday.
The initiative is among a package of eight new measures unveiled by PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng at the Lujiazui Forum in June for implementation in Shanghai.
The international operation center for the digital yuan is designed to promote internationalization of the digital currency and the development of financial market services while supporting innovation in digital finance, Pan said at the forum.
Along with its launch, the center unveiled three major platforms comprising a cross-border digital payment platform, a blockchain service platform and a digital asset platform.
The PBOC has preliminarily established a digital yuan financial infrastructure system. The newly launched center will be responsible for promoting cross-border connectivity with domestic and foreign financial infrastructures, as well as the operation of international and financial market services related to the digital yuan.
Operation of the three major platforms is expected to significantly enhance cross-border payment and inter-market connectivity experience for involved institutions serving their corporate clients.
"The cross-border digital payment platform, blockchain service platform and digital asset platform launched by the center will better assist the Bank of Communications (BOCOM) in enhancing its digital operation and service capabilities," said Qian Bin, BOCOM's vice president.
Qian also added that these platforms in the new center can also allow the bank to seize new opportunities in the digital age and make greater contribution to the development of Shanghai as an international financial hub.
"The China Construction Bank (CCB), through connecting its enterprise-level system into the central bank's digital yuan blockchain service platform and cross-border digital payment platform, will be able to provide clients with a credit traceability, low-cost, and near-instant cross-border payment experience," said Liu Jingfang, director of CCB's digital yuan promotion office.
Looking ahead, the PBOC will continue to support stable and long-term development of the center, support participating institutions in expanding application scenarios, help promote internationalization of the yuan, and serve innovation of digital finance.
