Storyline

The German Federal Defense Forces, or Bundeswehr, have begun a three-day military drill codenamed "Red Storm Bravo" in Hamburg starting Thursday, which focuses on the rapid deployment of troops to NATO's eastern flank in a simulated crisis.

According to the Bundeswehr, the scenario envisions the swift mobilization of forces to the Baltic states in response to an escalating conflict.

Kurt Leonards, head of the Bundeswehr's Hamburg command, said that the drill is "based on a fictional scenario under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty," in which tensions at the borders of Baltic states escalate, requiring troops to be deployed from Hamburg port to the Russian border.

The exercise primarily takes place at Hamburg port, an important hub for NATO. Unlike during the Cold War, the city is no longer a potential frontline area but serves as a critical logistical center. In the event of rising tensions, NATO troops and equipment will be transported through Hamburg port.
