Storyline

The White House on Wednesday announced the dismissal of most members of the National Council on the Humanities, retaining only four appointees by President Donald Trump.

The National Council on the Humanities, a board of 26 scholars and humanities leaders appointed to six-year terms, advises the chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities on policy, grant-making, and funding matters.

By law, the council's meetings require a quorum of 14, and any new appointments must be confirmed by the Senate.

The move came amid an already-chaotic moment in U.S. politics as Congress failed to pass a funding plans on Wednesday, putting hundreds of thousands of federal workers at risk of being furloughed.
