Israel and Hamas accused each other of violating a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal now in its seventh day on Thursday, as the former kept killing the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the latter failed to return the bodies of all deceased hostages.
Israel blamed Hamas for violating the ceasefire agreement by failing to return the remains of the 19 deceased hostages.
Under the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement which took effect last Friday, the first phase includes Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza City, Rafah, Khan Yunis, and the north, the exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the opening of five crossings for aid.
Since Monday, Hamas has released 20 Israeli captives alive and handed over 10 hostage bodies, while Israel has freed around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. But Israel said that forensic examination had found that one body handed over by Hamas was not that of an Israeli hostage.
The Israeli prime minister's office previously said that as part of the agreement, Hamas must return the remains of all the detainees to Israel, and Israel will not compromise on this.
Also on Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz's office threatened to resume military operations if Hamas did not abide by the terms of the ceasefire.
However, Hamas said that recovering the remains of the deceased hostages would be a lengthy challenge because of Gaza's vast destruction, and some bodies are in the areas controlled by Israeli troops.
Despite the ongoing ceasefire, Israel has not halted its military operations in the Strip.
Gaza-based health authorities said that Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians in southern Gaza's Khan Yunis on Thursday, killing two people.
The Israeli army said the two individuals emerged from a tunnel and approached them, posing an immediate threat.
Separately, Israeli forces also killed one person in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza on the same day.
A senior Hamas official accused Israel of flouting the truce deal by killing at least 24 people in multiple military operations in Gaza since last Friday, and said a list of such incidents had been handed over to mediators.
Since Israel launched its military campaign on Oct. 7, 2023, nearly 68,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 170,000 others wounded, according to Gaza's health authorities.
