Storyline

The 138th edition of the China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, has established for the first time a departure tax refund service zone within its exhibition hall, enabling international buyers to conveniently access instant tax rebates without leaving the venue.

Running from Oct 15 to Nov 4 in the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province, this edition of the fair has attracted a record number of buyers. So far, over 240,000 buyers from 218 export markets had pre-registered, reflecting a 10-percent increase compared to the previous edition.

The tax refund zone showcased over 200 items, including licensed merchandise from the upcoming 15th National Games, Canton Fair cultural products, and iconic souvenirs of Guangzhou. Numerous international buyers were seen shopping and processing their tax refunds on site, enjoying the seamless convenience of the service.

One such buyer, Ahmad Afzal, expressed his appreciation for the streamlined process.

"We can get the refund immediately. So like, we don't need to like buy the goods and go to the airport and from there we can get it," he said.

Lin Hui, director of the Second Tax Branch of the Guangdong Provincial Tax Bureau, explained the new refund service.

"This year, for the first time, we have set up a dedicated departure tax refund service zone inside the Canton Fair exhibition hall, to facilitate overseas visitors in purchasing goods eligible for tax refund upon departure. At the same time, we have set up an instant tax refund point. Overseas visitors can process tax refunds for eligible goods purchased both inside and outside the exhibition halls at this location, receiving their refunds on the spot," Lin said.

China has introduced a set of measures this year to further optimize its departure tax refund policy to meet overseas tourists' needs better and expand inbound consumption.

Under the new policies, the minimum purchase threshold for departure tax refunds has been reduced to 200 yuan (over 27 U.S. dollars) from 500 yuan, and the upper limit for cash refund has been raised to 20,000 yuan.

The new measures have ignited greater enthusiasm among Canton Fair attendees and global tourists.

Meanwhile, the fair has deployed volunteer teams to further facilitate timely refunds.

"At this edition of the Canton Fair, we have partnered with the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou and the Young Volunteers Association of Haizhu District to deploy multilingual young volunteers in the tax refund service zone. The volunteers provide overseas consumers with comprehensive support combining professional expertise and language assistance," said Ni Honglin, volunteer from the Haizhu District Tax Bureau.
