Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday put forward a five-point proposal for promoting a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization and building an Asia-Pacific community.
Xi made the proposal in his speech titled "Building an Inclusive Open Asia-Pacific Economy for All" at the first session of the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea (ROK), which opened on Friday with leaders gathering to seek stronger economic cooperation and chart a shared path toward a sustainable future.
Upon arriving at the meeting venue, Xi was warmly greeted by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
In his speech, Xi said that over the past 30-plus years since its founding, APEC has been spearheading the region’s rise to the forefront of global open development, making the Asia-Pacific the most dynamic part of the global economy.
Currently, changes unseen in a century are accelerating across the world and the Asia-Pacific faces growing uncertainties and destablizing factors in its development, Xi noted, saying that the rougher the seas, the more countries must pull together.
Xi called on all parties to stay true to APEC’s founding mission to promote economic growth and improve people’s lives, championing open development where everyone shares opportunities and emerges a winner.
He urged collective efforts to safeguard the multilateral trading system, practicing true multilateralism, enhancing the authority and effectiveness of the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, and updating international economic and trade rules to reflect the changing times, so as to better protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.
Xi called for the creation of an open economic environment in the region, stressing the importance of continuously promoting trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, deepening fiscal and financial cooperation, and steadily pushing for regional economic integration.
The Chinese president also highlighted efforts to keep industrial and supply chains stable and smooth, advocating for joining hands rather than parting ways, and strengthening links rather than severing them. He urged countries to vigorously expand their common interests, and support the open development of supply chains.
He also stressed the need for concrete and tangible results in physical, institutional and people-to-people connectivity so as to further consolidate the foundations for open development in the region.
Additionally, Xi called for the joint advancement of the digital and green transformation of trade, making digital technologies a strong catalyst for cross-border trade, removing various green barriers, and expanding cooperation in green industries, clean energy and green minerals.
Lastly, Xi called for promoting universally beneficial and inclusive development, adhering to the people-centered development philosophy, focusing on imbalances in development, and fostering an economic globalization that is more inclusive, sustainable, and beneficial to all peoples in the region.
Xi noted that China is working with various parties to promote the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative in order to strive for common development and shared prosperity with all nations.
He stressed that China always pursues the basic state policy of opening up, and has taken real steps to promote an open world economy.
Noting the Recommendations for Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan adopted recently at the fourth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Xi vowed to further deepen reform comprehensively and expand high-standard opening up, and create new opportunities for the Asia-Pacific and the world through new achievements of Chinese modernization.
The meeting was chaired by Lee Jae-myung under the theme "Building a Sustainable Tomorrow."
