China is willing to work with Japan to forge constructive and stable bilateral ties that meet the requirements of the new era, Chinese President Xi Jinping said while meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Friday on the sidelines of the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea.
Noting that China and Japan are close neighbors separated by a narrow strip of water, Xi said that the sustained, sound and steady development of China-Japan relations conforms to the common aspiration of the people in both countries, and the international community.
In accordance with the principles and directions stipulated in the four political documents between China and Japan, China is willing to work with the Japanese side to maintain the political foundation of the bilateral relationship, advance the strategic relationship of mutual benefit, and jointly forge constructive and stable China-Japan ties that meet the requirements of the new era, Xi said.
He expressed the hope that the new Japanese cabinet will establish correct understanding of China, cherish the efforts made by veteran statesmen and people from all walks of life in both countries to develop bilateral ties, and adhere to general direction of peaceful, friendly and cooperative bilateral relations.
He urged the Japanese side to abide by important consensus.
Japan should earnestly act on the political consensus on "comprehensively advancing the strategic relationship of mutual benefit", " that the two countries are cooperative partners and do not pose a threat to each other", and "learning lessons from history and looking ahead to the future", Xi noted.
He called on Japan to adhere to and fulfill clear provisions on major issues such as history, Taiwan as outlined in the four political documents between the two countries.
The Murayama Statement profoundly reflected on the Japanese history of aggression, and expressed apologies to the victim countries, Xi said, adding that the spirit deserves to be upheld.
Xi called on the two sides to adhere to win-win results.
China and Japan should enhance cooperation in such sectors as high-end manufacturing, digital economy, green development, fiscal and financial industry, medical services and elderly care, and third-party market, jointly uphold the multilateral trading system and keep global industrial and supply chains stable and smooth, he said.
Xi called on the two sides to promote people-to-people connectivity.
China and Japan should continue to engage in communication between governments, political parties, and legislative bodies, deepen and expand people-to-people and sub-national exchanges, and foster goodwill between the people of the two countries, he said.
Xi called on the two countries to strengthen multilateral coordination.
China and Japan should uphold good-neighborliness and friendship, equality and mutual benefit, and non-interference in internal affairs, practice true multilateralism, and advance the building of an Asia-Pacific community, he said.
Xi called on the two sides to properly manage differences, and avoid allowing contradictions and differences to define bilateral ties.
For her part, Takaichi said that Japan stands ready to work with China to maintain high-level exchanges, enhance communication at all levels, strengthen dialogue, deepen mutual understanding, and promote cooperation between the two countries.
The Japanese side is willing to steadily advance the strategic relationship of mutual benefit between the two countries, and forge a constructive and stable Japan-China relationship, she said.
On the Taiwan question, Japan will adhere to the position stated in the 1972 joint statement between Japan and China, Takaichi said.
