The three astronauts include mission commander Zhang Lu, who was previously a member of the Shenzhou-15 mission, with flight engineer Wu Fei and payload specialist Zhang Hongzhang each embarking on their first spaceflight missions.
Ahead of the send-off ceremony, the three Chinese astronauts reported to the commander-in-chief of China's manned space program that they were ready to undertake their mission.
After receiving orders from the commander-in-chief to proceed, the astronauts boarded a vehicle and departed for the launch site amid cheers from a crowd of well-wishers who had gathered to see them off.
The trio will take over control of the Tiangong space station from the outgoing Shenzhou-20 crew and stay in orbit for around six months.
Shenzhou-21 is the 37th flight mission of China's manned space program and the sixth manned mission during the application and development stage of the Tiangong space station.
