Storyline

The final full-system comprehensive drill was conducted at the Dongfeng landing site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Sunday night to ensure the safe return of the Shenzhou-20 crew upon completion of mission for over six months aboard China's Tiangong space station.

The drill tested the organization, coordination, and emergency response capabilities of all units involved in the return capsule retrieval mission, including air search and rescue, ground response, communication support, and medical monitoring and aid.

Given the challenges in nighttime tasks in winter, the aerial unit has intensified night search training and formulated corresponding search-and-rescue strategies, which will shorten the time for identifying terrains in the air and enhance the ability to accurately find the target.

"We rehearsed potential contingencies, and the exercise was smooth and effective, with excellent team coordination," said Dong Yang, a member of the aerial team with search and rescue mission for Shenzhou-20.

The medical rescue team also carried out systematic drills, centering on medical treatment under extreme conditions, such as low temperature and darkness.

"We're familiarized with the treatment process and have renewed our first-aid equipment, which allows our team members to conduct treatment more effectively," said Wang Bingjun, leader of the medical aid team with search and rescue mission for Shenzhou-20.

Meanwhile, the ground team has particularly strengthened the insulation and lighting measures, with three tethered lighting drones and 20 sets of handheld emergency lighting fixtures added, so as to enhance the on-site lighting effect.

"The final comprehensive drill was meticulously planned and organized, with a smooth execution throughout. It rehearsed exactly the entire search and rescue mission, effectively mitigating potential risks. Our staff of all well equipped participating systems demonstrated high morale, and are fully prepared for the mission," said Li Binbing, an engineer at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.
