China will continue to step up regulatory control over the import of Japanese aquatic products strictly in accordance with law and rules, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Friday.
Mao Ning, the spokeswoman, made the statement at a press conference in Beijing in response to a media inquiry about the recent resumption of export of scallops from Japan to China, which marked the first shipment since China imposed a ban two years ago following Japan's start of discharge of the nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the earthquake-crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.
According to Mao, China will continue working with the rest of the international community to ensure Japan will fulfill its commitments and will continue to accept the international monitoring of the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated wastewater and China's independent sampling and monitoring.
"Competent authorities of China will continue to step up regulation over the import of Japanese aquatic products strictly in accordance with the relevant laws and rules to ensure the people's food safety. Once any risk therefrom is identified, necessary import restrictions will be imposed immediately in accordance with law," said the spokeswoman.
