Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with visiting King Tupou VI of the Kingdom of Tonga in Beijing on Wednesday, calling for expanded cooperation between the two countries.
Li noted that the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and King Tupou VI on Tuesday has provided new strategic guidance for deepening bilateral relations.
Li said China is willing to work with Tonga to enhance political mutual trust, firmly support each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns, and expand cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, infrastructure, and people's livelihoods, so as to push for more solid progress in the development of bilateral relations and better serve the modernization efforts of both countries.
China stands ready to strengthen multilateral coordination with Tonga to jointly address global challenges including climate change, actively implement the concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the four major global initiatives put forward by President Xi, and promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system, he said.
King Tupou VI reaffirmed Tonga's adherence to the one-China principle, and expressed his country's support for the four major global initiatives.
He expressed Tonga's readiness to work with China to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation and promote reform of the global governance system.
King Tupou VI is on a state visit to China from Nov 21 to 27 at the invitation of Xi.
