The United Nations held a commemorative meeting on Tuesday in New York City to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
During the meeting, Riyad Mansour, Palestine's permanent observer to the UN, noted that Israel must fully withdraw from the Gaza Strip and allow the State of Palestine to assume complete administrative and security responsibilities in Gaza.
President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock addressed the meeting, calling for the implementation of the existing ceasefire arrangement.
On behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Courtenay Rattray, the UN chief's chef de cabinet, said during the meeting that the secretary-general reaffirmed "a simple truth: The Palestinian people have a right to dignity, to justice, and to self-determination."
Guterres called for "irreversible progress towards a two-State solution, in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security within their secure and recognized borders, on the basis of pre-1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both States."
He also said the October ceasefire agreement offers glimmers of hope, and the adoption of the resolution on Gaza by the UN Security Council is an important step in its consolidation.
