A deadly residential building fire in Hong Kong had left 44 people dead and 45 others injured by early Thursday morning, with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government pledging to mobilize all available resources to support the ongoing rescue operations.
The fire broke out in Wang Fuk Court, a residential area in Tai Po of Hong Kong, on Wednesday afternoon. The residential complex consists of eight residential buildings, and the fire once spread from one building to seven others.
Three executives of a construction company responsible for the renovation of the buildings have been arrested for suspected manslaughter, according to the Hong Kong Police Force on Thursday.
Chief Executive of the HKSAR John Lee said at a press briefing in the small hours on Thursday that the fire has been gradually brought under control after firefighters' tireless efforts.
Lee stressed that the HKSAR government has been mobilizing all resources to fully support the rescue operations.
"To extinguish the fire and rescue trapped residents, the Fire Services Department deployed over 140 fire engines and more than 60 ambulances. Over 800 firefighters and paramedics were mobilized, and drones were also used to assess the disaster scene. I have instructed the Fire Services Department to mobilize all necessary resources and manpower to put out the fire at full speed," Lee said.
The HKSAR government has instructed departments and units to carry out comprehensive work, including extinguishing the fire, rescuing trapped residents, treating the injured, providing assistance and emotional support to families, and conducting a full investigation into the accident.
"Regarding the Hospital Authority's response following the disaster, we have activated the Major Incident Control Center, and simultaneously mobilized nine Hospital Authority hospitals with emergency departments to stand by," said Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau.
"We have established eight shelters in Tai Po, and mobilized nearly 200 people from 19 care teams across the region. In response to this major incident, we have mobilized care teams from all 18 districts in Hong Kong to provide comprehensive support to residents in need," said Alice Mak Mei-kuen, secretary for home and youth affairs.
The Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee pledged its full support for the HKSAR government following the deadly fire.
It will closely monitor the progress of the rescue operations, maintain close communication with the HKSAR government, coordinate with relevant departments and local authorities to provide necessary assistance, and fully support the HKSAR government in its response and handling of the fire accident, the office said in a statement on Wednesday.
