"Our situation has become unbearable. We got flooded out, and we have no bedding or anything left inside the tent, which collapsed on us. What you see outside, it's even worse inside. Our situation is not just tragic - it is worse than bad. Why have we ended up here? What can we do other than grab a shovel, chase the water, and build sand barriers? This is all we can do."

Several days of heavy rainfall in Gaza have added to the misery of displaced Palestinians, who are struggling with floodwater, cold winter weather and a severe lack of necessary supplies.
In central Gaza, inundating tents in a camp for displaced civilians and leaving the ground thick with mud as the floodwater receded. Residents are using simple tools to build soil embankments around their tents to keep water out, saying there is not much more they can do in the circumstances.

Other residents called for urgent international support.

The UN and its partners are working to mitigate the latest crisis, including filling empty sacks of flour and food with sand to contain flooding in displacement camps. But UN agencies say more needs to be done in the face of Israel's refusal to allow critical items and key aid workers, including some UN partner NGOs, into the enclave. The UN says it is making representations to Israeli authorities to lift restrictions on critical aid supplies so desperately needed by civilians in Gaza.
