"It is relatively well known that Iceland leads the world when it comes to closing the gender gap. But what is important to me, and always has been, is that we share our learnings and lessons with the world. And why I have been so passionate about closing the gender gap is that if you truly want to be a powerful country, if you truly want to unlock the full potential of what we have within a country or within a company or within the world, you want to help everyone to matter. And that's how you become truly strong as an economy. It's smart economics to me, and it's also a very clever way to build a society that doesn't just compete, but also cares, for its people, and its shared home, the planet. And this to me is the heart of gender balance."

Closing the gender gap and building a society that cares each one of its members are what a country needs to do to become truly strong, Iceland's President Halla Tomasdottir said.
Speaking with the China Media Group after her participation in the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women in Beijing in mid-October, Tomasdottir said her country leads the world in ensuring gender equality or balance, which is part of what she calls "smart economics."
