Storyline

Russia and Ukraine on Saturday claimed to have struck each other's energy facilities in their latest reports of the ongoing cutthroat conflict.

On Saturday, the Russian defense ministry announced that in response to Ukrainian military attacks on civilian facilities within Russian territory, Russian forces launched a large-scale strike using precision-guided weapons and drones against Ukrainian military-industrial enterprises and their supporting energy facilities starting from Friday night.

Additionally, over the past 24 hours, Russian forces repelled Ukrainian attacks in multiple front lines while consolidating positions. They also targeted military airfield infrastructure, long-range drone storage and launch sites, as well as temporary deployment locations for Ukrainian troops and foreign mercenaries, it said.

Russian air defense units intercepted two Ukrainian Neptune long-range guided missiles and 158 fixed-wing drones, said the ministry.

On the same day, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that Ukrainian forces used drones to attack targets including an oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai and an aircraft repair plant in the city of Taganrog, Rostov region.

Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media on Saturday that from Friday night to Saturday morning, Russian forces launched 36 missiles and over 600 drones into Ukrainian territory, primarily targeting the country's energy infrastructure.

Türkiye's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure reported that an empty oil tanker called Virat came under a second attack in the Black Sea on Saturday morning, sustaining minor damage.

According to the ministry, the tanker was struck early Saturday by "unmanned surface vessels" about 35 miles offshore near the Bosphorus Strait. "The vessel sustained minor damage to its starboard side above the waterline," the ministry said, noting that the ship remained stable and its crew was in good health.

The Saturday incident followed two attacks on Friday, when Virat was first targeted by unmanned surface vessels and another empty Russia-bound tanker, Kairos, caught fire after an explosion 28 miles off the Turkish coast. Turkish authorities said the explosion on Kairos was caused by "an external factor."

All 20 crew members on Virat and 25 on Kairos were reported safe. Firefighting and cooling operations continued aboard the 274-meter-long Kairos, en route from Egypt to Russia.

On the same day, Ukrainian media cited sources from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) as saying that the agency, in a joint operation with the Ukrainian Navy, had used unmanned vessels to attack the two tankers. Both vessels sustained severe damage in the attack and are no longer operational.

The SBU sources indicated that the tankers belong to Russia's "shadow fleet," which is currently under sanctions. Russia has not yet responded to these claims.
