Storyline

Rustem Umerov, Ukraine's secretary of National Security and Defense Council, had departed with a team for the United States to discuss ways to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to a social media post by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday.

Zelensky appointed Rustem Umerov as the new head of the Ukrainian delegation to peace talks with the United States, other Ukrainian partners and Russia.

Umerov has replaced Andriy Yermak in the post.

"Rustem delivered a report today, and the task is clear: to swiftly and substantively work out the steps needed to end the war," said Zelensky on social media platform X.

He said Ukraine continues to work with the United States in the most constructive way possible, and expects that the results of the meetings in Geneva will now be hammered out in the United States.

On Friday, Yermak resigned after anti-corruption authorities searched his home as part of an investigation.

A senior U.S. official said Saturday that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner will meet with the Ukrainian officials in Florida on Sunday.

The previous talks between Ukrainian and U.S. delegations were held in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 23, revising and cutting the U.S. 28-point plan for ending the Ukraine crisis to 19 points.

Multiple U.S. media outlets reported on November 25 that Ukraine had agreed in principle to the U.S.-proposed peace agreement, though some clauses still require discussion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia generally thinks U.S.-proposed list of points on Ukraine could form a basis for future agreements.

On Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the United States had submitted to Russia a version of the peace plan following the U.S.-Ukraine Geneva talks, and Russia would discuss the plan next week.
