Storyline

Japan's factory activity contracted for a fifth straight month in November, as weak demand continued to weigh on the sector, according to a S and P Global survey released Monday.

The country's manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) inched up to 48.7 in November from 48.2 in October, but remained below the 50-point threshold that signals expansion, S and P Global said.

Survey breakdowns showed persistent softness in intermediate and capital goods, while the consumer goods category recorded a modest uptick.

New orders fell again in November, with firms citing a subdued global economy, tighter client spending, and weak capital investment as key drags on demand.
