Storyline

A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Tuesday called for accelerated efforts to advance a political settlement of the Palestinian issue.

Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at a session of the UN General Assembly, during which a resolution on the peaceful settlement of Palestine question was adopted.

The draft resolution, which was penned by Djibouti, Jordan, Mauritania, Qatar, Senegal and Palestine, was approved with 151 votes in favor, 11 against and 11 abstentions.

China voted in favor, while the United States and Israel voted against the resolution.

The resolution reaffirms the UN's responsibility for the question of Palestine, calls for ending the 1967 occupation and upholding the two-state solution, and demands that Israel halt settlement activity and comply with international law.

It also urges renewed negotiations and calls on states not to recognize border changes while increasing assistance to Palestinians amid a severe humanitarian crisis.

Addressing the session, Sun called for the immediate implementation of a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, the improvement of the humanitarian situation, and accelerated efforts to advance a political solution to the Palestinian issue.

Noting that the Palestinian people endured prolonged displacement, oppression, and occupation for over seven decades due to instability in the region, Sun called on all parties concerned to fully comply with the requirements of the ceasefire agreement and cease any actions that escalate tensions, and urged relevant mediators to take concrete measures to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire.

China calls for the prompt improvement of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and tangible relief for the suffering of the Palestinian people, Sun said, stressing that post-war reconstruction and governance in Gaza should be carried out in accordance with the principle of "Palestinians governing Palestine."

China calls for anchoring efforts to the broad direction of the two-state solution and accelerating the political settlement of the Palestinian issue. The international community should explore practical and feasible pathways to advance the two-state solution, supporting the early establishment of an independent Palestinian state and its admission as a full member of the United Nations, Sun said.

"China calls on the international community to face up the root causes of the Palestinian issue, demonstrate sense of responsibility, take decisive action to rectify historical injustices, and uphold fairness and justice. As a permanent member of the Security Council, China firmly supports the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights. China will continue to work with the international community to achieve a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and make unremitting efforts to promote an early, comprehensive, fair, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue," said Sun.
