Ahead of his scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday.
The discussion focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and prospects for a potential agreement.
Prior to his meeting with Zelensky on Sunday, Trump said in a social media post that he had a good and productive conversation with Putin earlier that day.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov briefed the media on the phone conversation, saying that it was initiated by the American side and lasted approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.
According to Ushakov, the U.S. president attentively listened to the Russian assessment regarding the prospects for reaching an agreement.
Putin and Trump generally share a similar view that a temporary ceasefire would only prolong the Ukrainian conflict. To ultimately halt hostilities, the Ukrainian side needs to make responsible decisions, he said.
Ushakov added that Putin agreed to Trump's proposal to continue mediation efforts within the framework of a specially established working group. Both sides agreed that the Russian and American leaders would speak to each other again following the U.S. president's meeting with the Ukrainian side, he said.
On Saturday, Russian president said that Russian forces are advancing rapidly on the front lines and that Russia has no interest in waiting for Ukrainian troops to withdraw from their current positions.
Putin further emphasized that if Ukraine is unwilling to resolve the issue peacefully, Russia will address all challenges through special military operations, implying a military resolution.
