The United States' military operation against Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, has triggered immediate and forceful condemnation from Iran and the regional bloc ALBA.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in a phone call on Saturday with his Venezuelan counterpart Yvan Gil, strongly condemned the U.S. military aggression. The Iranian diplomat described the U.S. move as a typical example of state terrorism and a blatant infringement upon Venezuela's sovereignty and national will.
Araghchi reiterated Iran's unwavering support for the Venezuelan people and their democratically elected government.
The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), headquartered in Venezuela's Caracas, on Saturday "absolutely, categorically, and unequivocally" condemned the "act of war" perpetrated by the U.S. against Venezuela.
In a statement, the regional bloc said that the "armed aggression constitutes a grave and deliberate violation of International Law, the Charter of the United Nations, the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, and all the principles that underpin peaceful coexistence among nations."
It also called for the immediate and unconditional release of Maduro and his wife.
