"It is no longer news that the United States withdraws from international organizations. In Fact, the significance of international organizations and multilateral institution lies not in representing private interests of any single country, but in safeguarding common interests of member states. It is precisely for this reason that the international system with the United Nations at its core has maintained the world peace and stability, facilitated economic and social development, and safeguarded rights and interests of all countries for more than 80 years."

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Mao Ning, spokeswoman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"The current international situation proves once again that only when the multilateral system operates effectively can the spread of the 'law of the jungle' be prevented and the international order not be dominated by the practice that 'might makes right and force makes justice'. This is what most countries, especially small and weak ones, need most at present. No matter how the situation changes, China will always uphold multilateralism, support the United Nations in playing a core role in international affairs, and work with the international community to promote a more just and equitable global governance system."

Storyline

China will always uphold multilateralism, support the United Nations in playing a central role in international affairs, and work together with the international community to promote a more just and equitable global governance system, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Thursday.

Mao made the remarks at a regular news briefing when asked to comment on a White House statement that U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a memorandum directing his country's withdrawal from 66 international organizations, comprised of 31 UN entities and 35 non-UN organizations.

"It is no longer news that the United States withdraws from international organizations. In Fact, the significance of international organizations and multilateral institution lies not in representing private interests of any single country, but in safeguarding common interests of member states. It is precisely for this reason that the international system with the United Nations at its core has maintained the world peace and stability, facilitated economic and social development, and safeguarded rights and interests of all countries for more than 80 years," Mao said.

This is what most countries, especially small and weak ones, need most at present.
