Storyline


The sound and stable development of China-Canada relations serves the common interests of both countries, Chinese President Xi Jinping said when meeting with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Beijing on Friday.

During the meeting, Xi recalled his last meeting with Carney on the sidelines of the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea (ROK), in October 2025.

I'm very pleased to meet you again. In October last year, we met in Gyeongju, ROK. That meeting went very well and opened a new chapter of improvement and positive momentum in China-Canada relations. This marks your first visit to China since assuming the office of prime minister. The sound and stable development of China-Canada relations serves the common interests of our two countries and contributes to global peace, stability, and development. I'm willing to work together with you to promote China-Canada relations onto a path of healthy, stable and sustainable development, with a sense of responsibility toward history, the people, and the world, to better benefit the people of both countries," Xi told Carney.

For his part, Carney said that the partnership between Canada and China will bring opportunities not only to the people of both countries, but also to the rest of the world.

"Thank you, President Xi, for your hospitality, for the warm welcome that's been extended to this delegation, and for the opportunity that our partnership brings to both our peoples and I would suggest as well to the world. Mr. President, together we can build on the best of what this relationship has been in the past to create a new one adapted to new global realities that will deliver stability, security and prosperity to our peoples on both sides of the Pacific," he said.

At the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Carney is paying an official visit to China from Wednesday to Saturday.
