Chinese President Xi Jinping met with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Beijing on Friday.
Xi recalled his meeting with Carney in the Republic of Korea in October 2025, saying it ushered in a new phase of bilateral ties with a major turn towards positive development.
The two sides engaged in in-depth discussions on resuming and restarting cooperation across various fields, achieving positive outcomes, he added.
Stressing that the healthy and stable development of China-Canada relations serves the common interests of both countries and contributes to global peace, stability, development, and prosperity, Xi said both sides should advance the building of a new strategic partnership with a sense of responsibility toward history, the people, and the world, and promote China-Canada relations onto a path of healthy, stable and sustainable development to better benefit the peoples of both countries.
Xi put forward four points on China-Canada relations:
First, the two countries should be partners of mutual respect.
Over the past 55 years since the establishment of China-Canada diplomatic relations, the bilateral relationship has weathered storms and experienced ups and downs, yielding valuable historical lessons and practical insights. Although China and Canada have different national conditions, both countries should respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, respect their respective political systems and development paths, and adhere to the right way for countries to get along with each other, said Xi.
Second, the two countries should be partners of common development.
The essence of China-Canada economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, with both sides benefiting from cooperation. China's high-quality development and high-level opening-up will continue to provide new opportunities and expand new space for China-Canada cooperation. Both sides should focus on expanding cooperation and downsizing the negative lists, so as to strengthen their bonds of shared interests with deepened and broadened collaboration, said Xi.
Third, the two countries should be partners of mutual trust.
Pointing out that people-to-people bonds represent the most fundamental, solid, and enduring form of connectivity, Xi said both sides should encourage enhanced exchanges and cooperation across various sectors including education, culture, tourism, sports, and local governance, facilitate people-to-people interactions, and cultivate a strong foundation of public support.
Fourth, the two countries should be partners of collaboration.
A divided world cannot address the common challenges facing humanity, and the way forward lies in upholding and practicing genuine multilateralism and advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, Xi said, adding that China stands ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Canada within frameworks such as the United Nations, the Group of Twenty (G20), and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to jointly tackle global challenges.
For his part, Carney said that Canada and China share a long history of friendly exchanges, with highly complementary economies and broad shared interests, presenting abundant opportunities.
Canada is willing to build a strong and sustainable new strategic partnership with China, bringing greater benefits to the people of both countries, he added.
Carney said that under Xi's leadership, China's economy has developed rapidly, with remarkable achievements in scientific and technological innovation, providing momentum for global economic growth.
The prime minister reiterated Canada's commitment to the one-China policy, saying his country is dedicated to working with China in a spirit of mutual respect to expand and strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade and economy, energy, agriculture, finance, education, and climate change.
Multilateralism is the cornerstone of global security and stability, and the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi holds significant importance, he said.
In the face of a volatile and tumultuous international landscape, Canada is willing to work closely with China in multilateral coordination, uphold multilateralism and the authority of the United Nations, and jointly safeguard world peace and stability, said Carney.
The two sides issued a joint statement after the meeting.
Carney is on an official visit to China from Wednesday to Saturday.
