Israel allowed only five of the many waiting Palestinian patients to exit the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing on the first day of its opening on Monday.
After nearly 18 months of closure, a large number of patients are in desperate need for medial treatment abroad. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 18,500 patients, including 4,000 children, await medical evacuation from Gaza for treatment that is not available locally.
However, the crossing is operating for only about six hours per day and is restricted to pedestrians only, according to a statement released by Israel's Defense Ministry. On top of that, people are subjected to several rounds of security screening before they are allowed to pass.
Israeli officials had previously said that up to 150 people per day would be allowed to leave Gaza during the initial phase of reopening. But Monday's operation showed that only a far lower number was achieved.
"We are waiting here now, hoping to leave as soon as possible. We hope the crossing can be opened to all wounded and sick people, because they urgently need medical treatment," said a patient named Hamza Abu Draa, who is waiting in the Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis.
The Rafah crossing has been almost completely closed since Israeli forces took control of it in May 2024, a move that effectively isolated the Gaza Strip from the outside world and deteriorated the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave.
