Storyline

The people's concrete needs including supply guarantee and daily meals have always been close to Chinese President Xi Jinping's heart during his visits to grassroots officials and residents ahead of the Spring Festival.

The Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival for the Chinese and a time for family reunions.

Since his election as general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee in 2012, Xi has made it a tradition to visit ordinary people across the country ahead of the festival.

This year it falls on Feb 17.

On Tuesday morning, President Xi came to a Beijing downtown community in Xicheng District which was renovated to be barrier-free and age-friendly.

He visited the community canteen for elderly people to learn about the meal services provided there.

Caring for and supporting the elderly is a shared responsibility of the whole society, Xi said, urging efforts to create better conditions for them to enjoy happy and fulfilling twilight years.

Xi also greeted delivery workers who were taking a break at the community canteen, and commended their hard work and contributions.

"You've worked very hard. The city couldn't function without workers like you. Your work meets the needs of countless households. I care deeply about you and hope you all can lead good lives and work well. Party committees and governments must care for them. I wish you a happy Chinese New Year," Xi said.

"We should care for our own elders and extend that care to all elders. We must improve both elderly care and childcare," Xi said at the community.

At the Longfusi commercial area in Beijing's Dongcheng District, Xi was briefed on urban renewal efforts Tuesday morning.

At a Spring Festival market, he visited various stalls selling festive goods and talked with people there, sharing memories of his visits to the area when he was young. He also bought some specialty food and culture-themed products.

Xi said he was very pleased to see the bustling, vibrant festive scene and well-stocked holiday goods there.

The Spring Festival is an important occasion for the people, Xi said, urging officials at all levels to make solid efforts in ensuring people's wellbeing and strengthening workplace safety so that everyone can enjoy a joyful Chinese New Year.

"I extend my Spring Festival greetings to the people of all ethnic groups across the country. I wish the people of all ethnic groups vigor and vitality, good health, success in your endeavors, and happiness for your families in the Year of the Horse," said Xi.

"I also wish our great motherland ever more magnificent landscapes, favorable weather, enduring prosperity, and lasting peace and stability for the nation and the people," said Chinese president.
