Storyline

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel reiterated on Thursday that Cuba will defend itself with determination and firmness against any terrorist filtration or mercenary aggression that seeks to undermine the country's sovereignty and national stability.

Diaz-Canel made the statement in a social media post in response to a U.S.-registered speedboat's intrusion into Cuba's territorial waters.

The Cuban Ministry of the Interior said on Wednesday that the country's coast guard found a speedboat registered in the U.S. state of Florida illegally intruded into its territorial waters.

When the coast guard approached the boat for identification, the crew opened fire on the Cuban personnel and was counterattacked. Four people on the speedboat were killed and another six were injured in the incident, said the interior ministry.

The Cuban government said that there were 10 armed personnel on the speedboat, according to media reports.

All the arrested individuals are Cubans living in the United States, with most of them having records of crimes and violence and being on the wanted list of the Cuban government. They confessed that the intention of this trip was to carry out terrorist infiltration attempts.

During the arrest operation, Cuban security authorities seized military equipment such as firearms, homemade combustion devices, bulletproof vests and camouflage uniforms.

In addition, another suspect responsible for supporting the infiltration attempts has been arrested within the country.

The relevant investigation is still underway.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday denied U.S. government personnel’s involvement in the incident, saying that he did not know who has possession of the vessel.

He further said that the U.S. side will verify the relevant information and prepare for a response.
