Storyline

China is ready to work with all parties to defend international fairness and justice, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a regular briefing in Beijing on Monday.

"First of all, China has clearly stated its position. With the support of China and Russia, the UN Security Council met in emergency session yesterday on the current situation in Iran," said Mao, in response to a media query about the phone conversation held Sunday between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

"China stands ready to work with other parties to speak up for justice at the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and other platforms and uphold international fairness and justice," she said.

During the phone conversation between the two foreign ministers, Wang said it is unacceptable for the United States and Israel to launch strikes on Iran during the Iran-U.S. negotiations, and it is also unacceptable for them to blatantly kill the leader of a sovereign state and incite government change.

Wang clarified China's position on the situation in Iran, calling for an immediate cessation of military operations, a prompt return to dialogue and negotiations, and a joint opposition to unilateral actions.

Lavrov said that Russia shares the same position with China and stands ready to strengthen coordination and communication with the Chinese side to send a clear signal through platforms such as the UN and the SCO, calling for an immediate cessation of the war and a return to diplomatic negotiations.
