China's economy demonstrated remarkable resilience and vitality in 2025, achieving robust growth despite a complex domestic and international environment, an official said in Beijing on Tuesday.
Liu Jieyi, spokesman for the fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, briefed the press on the session, one day before its opening.
China's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 5 percent year on year to 140.19 trillion yuan (about 20.4 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2025, cementing China's position as the world's second-largest economy, official data showed on Saturday.
"Over the past year, despite a turbulent external environment, China's economy has pushed forward with innovation-led and high-quality development under mounting pressure, demonstrating strong resilience and vitality. China's total economic output surpassed the 140-trillion-yuan mark, maintaining its leading position among major global economies in growth rate. The deep integration of sci-tech with industry has led to a surge in innovative achievements and the rapid development of new quality productive forces," Liu said.
The vitality of the world's second-largest economy was on full display during the nine-day Spring Festival holiday from Feb 15-23, which was described as the "longest in history."
"This longest ever Spring Festival holiday saw a significant boom in the catering, entertainment, and retail sectors. Domestic tourist spending exceeded 803.4 billion yuan, an increase of 126.4 billion yuan compared to the same period last year, underscoring the immense vitality of China's super-sized market," Liu said.
Liu further illustrated the nation's dynamism by referring to the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush from Feb 2 to March 13, the world's largest annual human migration, during which millions of Chinese journeyed back to their hometowns to reunite with family.
"The Spring Festival travel rush is projected to see a staggering 9.5 billion cross-regional passenger trips. This figure, equivalent to more than one trip for every person globally, reflects the surging vitality of a mobile China," he said.
Liu called on the 1.4 billion population to strengthen confidence, capitalize on strengths, and tackle challenges head-on to steer the Chinese economy toward steady and sustained growth.
"The Chinese economy has consistently grown by navigating challenges and maturing through trials. Although it still faces some persistent issues and new challenges, the Chinese economy has a solid foundation, advantages in many areas, strong resilience, and great potential. The conditions for and underlying trend of long-term growth remain unchanged," he said.

"Focusing on key and pressing issues such as how to make macroeconomic governance more effective, build a modern industrial system, and develop a strong domestic market, we've carefully organized inspections, visits, and special research studies to propose practical measures and offer sound suggestions for promoting high-quality development," Liu said.
