Storyline

Regarding the Iran situation, a Chinese spokesman said on Wednesday that China calls for an immediate stop to military operations, preventing further escalation of tensions, and resuming dialogue and negotiations to uphold peace and stability in the Middle East.

Lou Qinjian, the spokesman for the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), made the statement at a press conference held one day ahead of the opening of the session.

"China is paying close attention to the Iran situation. Iran's national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected. China calls for an immediate stop to military operations, preventing further escalation of tensions, and resuming dialogue and negotiations to uphold peace and stability in the Middle East. To this end, China will continue to play its role as a responsible major country," said Lou.

"China holds that mutual respect and equality among all countries, big or small, represents the progress of history and is the foremost principle of the UN Charter. No country has the right to control global affairs or the destiny of others, or keep advantages in development all to itself. Even less should one be allowed to do whatever it likes," said Lou.

"President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative, emphasizing sovereignty equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and real actions. The initiative provides China's solution to promoting the building of a more just and equitable global governance system," said the spokesman.

The year 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. Eighty years ago, the international community learned profound lessons from the scourge of two world wars and founded the United Nations, said the spokesman.

"Over 80 years of practice has clearly showed to the world that the UN's role should be strengthened, not weakened, and the UN's status must be safeguarded, not replaced. As a major country in the world and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China stands ready to work with other countries to firmly maintain the authority and status of the UN, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, practice true multilateralism, and make more contributions to improving the global governance system and building a community with a shared future for humanity," said Lou.
