China will make concerted efforts towards achieving self-reliance and strength in science and technology, according to a government work report delivered by Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the opening meeting of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.

China's top legislature opened its annual session on Thursday morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Party and state leaders present at the meeting.

Li stressed that efforts will be made in seeking breakthroughs in core technologies and the construction of three international centers for scientific and technological innovation.

"We will move faster to achieve greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology. We will drive advances in original innovation and breakthroughs in core technologies in key fields; fully leverage the strengths of the new system for mobilizing resources nationwide and carry out major science and technology projects to bring about more original advances. We will pursue full integration between technological and industrial innovation. We will develop Beijing (the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region), Shanghai (the Yangtze River Delta), and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into international centers for scientific and technological innovation and turn them into world-class innovation engines," he said.

Li also said that more measures will be taken to cultivate and attract young talent, with more means adopted to enable these talents to give full play to their strengths.
