"As I speak to you now, sadly, more than 108 of our country's historical heritage sites have been damaged. The damage is in 12 provinces and 17 cities, including six historical districts. Thirty-four of our museums have been affected. Following the U.S. and Israeli strikes in the vicinity of Saadabad, Tehran province alone has seen extensive destruction to 60 sites, followed by Isfahan with 20, Kurdistan with 12, Kermanshah with 4, and other provinces. Unfortunately, four of these sites are on the UNESCO World Heritage List."

"The reality is that weapons of mass destruction, such as bunker-buster bombs, are often capable of destroying even modern structures, let alone our sites, many of which are extremely old. The main concern for us is the resilience of these structures, especially given their age and historical fragility."

"Yes. First of all, we have provided UNESCO with the locations and exact coordinates of all these sites. You can even see these locations on Google, including their protected boundaries in detail. These details were originally required from us during the registration process, and more recently, amid the conflict, UNESCO again requested that we share this information so it could pass it on to the parties to the conflict, with the aim of protecting these heritage sites."

More than 100 heritage sites in Iran have been damaged following recent air strikes, according to the Iranian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts.

As of March 17, the number of affected sites has risen to 108. The capital city, Tehran, has suffered the most extensive losses, with 60 historical landmarks reported damaged.

Unfortunately, four of these sites are on the UNESCO World Heritage List," Ali Darabi, Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts of Iran, told a China Global Television Network (CGTN) reporter.

Darabi pointed out that most heritage sites have fragile structures that are particularly vulnerable to powerful munitions used in the strikes.

"The reality is that weapons of mass destruction, such as bunker-buster bombs, are often capable of destroying even modern structures, let alone our sites, many of which are extremely old. The main concern for us is the resilience of these structures, especially given their age and historical fragility," he said.

UNESCO has expressed concern over the protection of cultural heritage sites after the Golestan Palace in Tehran, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was damaged in a strike in early March. Darabi said the ministry is coordinating with UNESCO to secure more protection for the designated sites in Iran.

"We have provided UNESCO with the locations and exact coordinates of all these sites. You can even see these locations on Google, including their protected boundaries in detail. These details were originally required from us during the registration process, and more recently, amid the conflict, UNESCO again requested that we share this information so it could pass it on to the parties to the conflict, with the aim of protecting these heritage sites," said the deputy minister.
