China aims to further boost domestic consumption over the next five years, giving full play to its super-large market, as part of the efforts to boost economic development.
During the nine-day Spring Festival holiday from Feb 15 to 23, the country recorded 596 million domestic trips, with tourism spending surpassing 800 billion yuan (about 115.93 billion U.S. dollars), both setting new records.
Offline consumption surged during the holiday, its growth rate surpassing that of online consumption for the first time in recent years.
In the first two months of this year, China's total retail sales of consumer goods reached 8.61 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.8 percent.
With a population of over 1.4 billion and a per capita GDP exceeding 13,000 U.S. dollars, the country is the world's largest and most promising consumer market.
Leveraging the strength of China’s enormous market is included in the outline of China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), a key blueprint mapping out the country's development policy priorities through the end of the decade.
The 15th Five-Year Plan outlines the need to further implement special initiatives to boost consumption, enhance residents' spending power and willingness to consume, expand the supply of high-quality goods to meet the diverse needs of different groups, and promote rapid growth in overall consumption of goods and services.
Since the beginning of the year, the trade-in program for consumer goods has driven up the sales of related products to over 300 billion yuan.
This year, China has arranged 250 billion yuan of ultra-long-term special treasury bonds to support the trade-in program.
More smart and green products are entering households.
Data from the Ministry of Commerce show that in the first two months of this year, sales of smart glasses and embodied intelligent robots on key platforms increased year on year by 1.8 times and 13 percent, respectively.
This year, the Chinese government has introduced 12 measures focusing on transportation, domestic services, travel, and sports events to promote the upgrading of service consumption.
In January and February, China's service retail sales grew by 5.6 percent compared with one year ago, significantly faster than the growth rate of commodity retail sales.
Currently, 50 cities across the country are piloting the development of new consumption formats, models, and scenarios to cultivate new growth points in consumption.
The first batch of 8.6 billion yuan in fiscal support funds has already been disbursed, to accelerate the release of the consumption potential of the market.
The consumption vitality of lower-tier markets, represented by third- and fourth-tier cities and counties, is also being continuously stimulated.
Since the beginning of the year, regions across the county have been developing core business districts, upgrading and transforming commercial outlets, and developing comprehensive commercial centers according to local conditions.
In the first two months of this year, rural retail sales of consumer goods went up by 3.2 percent year on year, with growth rate faster than that of urban areas.
"In line with the goal set forth in the 15th Five-Year Plan to 'achieve a higher level of dynamic balance between supply and demand, and strengthen the internal driving force and reliability of the domestic economy', we will formulate and implement a strategic plan to expand domestic demand over the next five years to promote positive interactions bewteen consumption and investment, as well as between supply and demand," said Yang Te, deputy director of the Department of National Economic Comprehensive Affairs at the National Development and Reform Commission.
