Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has sent a letter to the U.N. Secretary-General and members of the Security Council, strongly condemning the recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities, and calling for immediate action by the Security Council, media reported on Sunday.
In the letter, Araghchi stated that the attacks on Iran's Natanz nuclear facility and the Bushehr nuclear power plant site constitute serious violations of the U.N. Charter, the Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and fundamental principles of international law, according to the reports.
He emphasized that such strikes could trigger a large-scale leakage of radioactive materials, leading to incalculable catastrophic consequences for the health of nearby residents and the regional environment, and posing dangers far beyond those of conventional military conflict.
The foreign minister called on the international community to jointly condemn such acts that violate international law, demand an immediate halt to the attacks on Iran, and ensure full compensation.
Araghchi also urged the U.N. Security Council to push Israel to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and place its nuclear facilities under the IAEA's comprehensive safeguards.
The United States and Israel launched a large-scale military campaign against Iran on February 28. They carried out two airstrikes on the Natanz nuclear facility on March 1, struck a building at the Bushehr nuclear power plant site on March 17, and again targeted the Natanz uranium-enrichment facility on March 21.
