A former Iranian military commander dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump's claims of "productive" talks with Iran as a deception strategy with ulterior motives, as separate reports said the United States is ramping up military deployments to the Middle East.
In a Truth Social post earlier on Monday, Trump said the U.S. and Iran had held "very good and productive conversations" over the past two days aimed at resolving hostilities in the Middle East.
Based on the "in-depth, detailed, constructive" nature of the talks, he had instructed the Pentagon to postpone any strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure for five days, pending further discussions.
Iran, however, rejected the claim. The semi-official Fars news agency reported that there had been no direct or indirect contact with Trump, while the Iranian Foreign Ministry said his remarks were "part of efforts to reduce energy prices and buy time" for military plans.
Hossein Kanani Moghaddam, former commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), told China Media Group (CMG) that Trump was employing a "deception strategy" to influence global energy prices at the start of the week.
He said the proposed five-day delay was intended to buy time for U.S. forces to arrive in the region and move to control Iranian islands.
Kanani Moghaddam pointed out that as long as U.S. forces remain in the Middle East and Iran receives no international guarantees that there would be no further attacks by the United States and Israel, the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed, Iran's military operations would continue, and no negotiations would take place.
The Wall Street Journal, citing two U.S. officials, said on Monday that the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, the amphibious landing dock USS New Orleans, along with more than 2,000 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, are expected to cross into U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for U.S. forces in the Middle East, on Friday, coinciding with Trump's deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
On the same day, the Jerusalem Post, citing a U.S. official, said the U.S. military has accelerated the deployment of thousands of Marines and Navy personnel to the Middle East. The deployment includes the USS Boxer Amphibious Readiness Group, featuring the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, alongside the amphibious transport docks USS Portland and USS Comstock, carrying about 4,500 personnel.
Citing two sources, it reported that senior U.S. officials have told counterparts in Israel and other countries that the country may have little choice but to consider a ground operation targeting Iran's Kharg Island.
Also on Monday, the New York Times, citing U.S. senior defense officials, reported that the Pentagon is weighing a possible deployment of airborne troops to support military operations in Iran.
The combat forces would come from the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division's "Immediate Response Force," a brigade of about 3,000 soldiers capable of being deployed anywhere in the world within 18 hours, said the report, noting that so far nothing had been ordered by the Pentagon or the U.S. Central Command.
