A shelter-in-place order was lifted following air-quality testing on Tuesday following an oil refinery fire in the U.S. city of Port Arthur, Texas, while hidden dangers may remain.
A massive explosion broke out at a Valero refinery on Monday evening, sending plumes of smoke into the air and prompting the shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. The fire was put out on Tuesday, according to local media reports.
Though no injuries were reported from the explosion, hidden dangers related to aging equipment are still may hinder the resumption of normal operation of the refinery.
Footage recorded by the China Central Television (CCTV) shows large stretches of rusty facilities standing in the plant, which was established in 1980.
Texas is home to the country's largest petrochemical cluster, with refineries in the state processing one-third of U.S. refining capacity.
Across the state, the refinery industry has faced the problem of aging equipment for decades. In spite of rounds of plant expansion and equipment upgrading, the core facilities of many plants have continued to operate in a highly corrosive environment amid high temperatures and high pressure.
