U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that talks with Iran could resume in Pakistan within the next two days, according to media reports after the collapse of weekend negotiations prompted Washington to impose a blockade on Iranian ports.

"Something could be happening over the next two days, and we're more inclined to go there (Pakistan)," Trump told a New York Post reporter.

"It's more likely, you know why? Because the field marshal is doing a great job," Trump said, referring to Pakistani Field Marshal General Asim Munir, the country's chief of army staff, who attended the previous talks between the U.S. and Iranian negotiators on Saturday.

Washington has proposed a 20-year suspension of Iran's nuclear activities and Iran, for its part, has countered with a proposal to suspend its nuclear program for up to five years during their stalled talks in Pakistan on Saturday, according to a report from The New York Times on Monday.

Washington is not seeking a permanent ban on Iran's uranium enrichment, a compromise that would allow Tehran to argue it has not permanently relinquished its right under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to produce nuclear fuel, the newspaper cited sources familiar with the talks as saying.

Other issues looming over the negotiations include restoring free passage in the Strait of Hormuz and ending Iran's support for proxy groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, said the report.

Earlier on Monday, Trump said his administration received a call from Iran on Monday morning, claiming Iran "would like to make a deal very badly" but also signaling Washington's eagerness to reach a deal to end the conflict, stressing that the sticking point in talks with Iran "was over nuclear" and a priority for the United States is to retrieve Iran's enriched uranium.

Damage from U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran in 40 days is estimated at about 270 billion U.S. dollars, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said on Tuesday, citing preliminary assessments.

The figure is not final, Mohajerani stressed, adding damages usually have to be examined in several layers. But war reparations will be one of the issues that Iran's negotiating team is pursuing in the Islamabad talks, she said.

Also on Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the United States and Israel have made the removal of enriched material from Iran as a condition for ending their joint offensive.

Speaking in a public address, Katz claimed that Israeli-U.S. attacks "destroyed" Iran's ability to produce nuclear weapons.

"The only remaining issue is the enriched material, which could potentially serve as a basis for attempting to restart the (nuclear) project," Katz said. "Therefore, the United States and Israel have defined the removal of the material from Iran as a prerequisite for ending the (military) campaign."

Delegations from Iran and the United States held extended negotiations in Islamabad on Saturday and early Sunday to ease tension in the Middle East. The talks, which failed to produce an agreement, took place after a ceasefire was announced on April 8 between Iran, the United States and Israel, following 40 days of fighting.

After negotiations with Iran failed to yield any agreement, the United States took drastic measures on Monday by preventing ships traveling to and from Iranian ports from transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial artery for the global energy market.
