The meeting between Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, opens a new chapter for exchanges between the two parties, said Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, on Wednesday.

Invited by the CPC Central Committee and Xi, Cheng led a delegation to visit the Chinese mainland last week. Xi delivered an important speech on advancing relations between the two parties and across the Taiwan Strait in meeting with her, Chen said at a press conference in Beijing.

"This is the first meeting between the two parties' leaders in 10 years. It opens a new chapter in CPC-KMT exchanges and is of great significance," Chen said.

Xi elaborated on policies for promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and national rejuvenation under the new circumstances, stressing that people on both sides are Chinese and belong to the Chinese nation and share Chinese culture, he said.

Xi also reiterated the determination to opposing secessionist activities and external interference, vowed to promote cross-Strait exchanges and improve compatriots' livelihoods, and encouraged compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to unite in pursuing reunification and national rejuvenation, Chen said.

Xi's speech directed the way forward for cross-Strait relations, said Chen.

"General Secretary Xi Jinping put forward four points on cross-Strait relations in his speech, which masterly integrate past, present and future, embody the sense of mission and responsibility to strive for cross-Strait peace, well-being for compatriots, and rejuvenation for the nation, are full of profound care and feelings for Taiwan compatriots, and have drawn strong resonance among Chinese nationals at home and abroad and the international community. They are bound to exert significant and far-reaching impact on cross-Strait relations," said Chen.

The Chinese central government will stay committed to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, unite the vast majority of Taiwan compatriots, deepen cross-Strait exchanges, cooperation and integrated development, resolutely oppose separatist activities and external interference, and promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and advance the cause of China's reunification and national rejuvenation, said Chen.

"We hope the vast majority of Taiwan compatriots shall go with the trend of history, uphold the overall interests of the Chinese nation, and work with us to firmly guard our common homeland of the Chinese nation, secure the lasting well-being of the Chinese nation, and share the glory of the motherland's reunification and national rejuvenation," said Chen.
