The United Nations (UN) on Thursday welcomed the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire and called on the parties concerned to respect the agreement.
Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the ceasefire is a crucial step toward ending hostilities and alleviating the suffering of civilians.
The UN stands ready to provide support through its political and peacekeeping missions and continues to urge all parties to fully implement Security Council resolutions to achieve a permanent ceasefire.
Dujarric said the UN special coordinator for Lebanon and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) commander are maintaining close communication with all parties to ensure the strict implementation of the agreement.
Furthermore, the achievement of the ceasefire agreement does not immediately resolve Lebanon's severe humanitarian crisis, he said, adding that humanitarian operations in Lebanon are facing a serious funding shortfall.
