Crude oil futures surged on Wednesday as investor anxiety spiked regarding the future of U.S.-Iran negotiations and continued disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz
The West Texas Intermediate for June delivery added 3.29 U.S. dollars, or 3.58 percent, to settle at 95.15 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while Brent crude for June delivery went up 3.43 dollars, or 3.48 percent, to settle at 101.91 dollars a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that there is "no time frame" for ending the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, stressing there is "no time pressure" on the extended ceasefire or pending peace talks.
Trump had initially said that the war would last four to six weeks after it began on Feb. 28.
Earlier on the same day, U.S. online media outlet Axios cited three U.S. officials as saying that Trump may extend the ceasefire with Iran for three to five more days.
Just as the two-week truce that began on April 8 was nearing expiration, Trump on Tuesday extended the ceasefire "at Pakistan's request," but the United States continued to blockade Iranian ports.
Terming the blockade as a ceasefire violation, Iran has refused to attend the talks, together with the cancellation of U.S. Vice President JD Vance's Pakistan visit, further shadowing the expectation on the fresh Iran-U.S. peace talks in Islamabad.
