China reported 337.47 million inter-regional passenger trips on Friday, the first day of this year's five-day May Day holiday, according to transport authorities on Saturday.

The figure represents a 1.4 percent increase from the same period last year and a 52.9 percent increase from the previous day.

Railway passenger traffic rose 7.5 percent from a year ago to 24.844 million trips.

Road trips reached 308.54 million, an increase of 1 percent year on year.

Among them, commercial passenger trips represented 42.19 million journeys, an increase of 6.9 percent year on year, while non-commercial passenger vehicle trips reached 266.35 million, an increase of 0.1 percent year on year.

The waterways handled 1.761 million trips, marking a 6.8 percent increase year on year.

The civil aviation passenger numbers stood at 2.325 million trips, down by 0.9 percent from the previous year.

China's postal sector collected 446 million parcels, and delivered 517 million parcels, down 14.4 percent and 9.8 percent from the previous day, respectively.

The May Day holiday, running from May 1 to 5, is typically one of the busiest travel periods of the year. During this time, millions of Chinese passengers hit the road to visit family or go traveling.
