Peru will hold a presidential runoff after no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote in the April 12 election, according to the results released Friday by the country's National Office of Electoral Processes.

With all ballots counted, Keiko Fujimori of the right-wing Popular Force party led with 17.18 percent of the vote, followed by Roberto Sanchez of the left-wing Together for Peru party at 12.03 percent. Rafael Lopez Aliaga of the far-right Popular Renewal party ranked third with 11.9 percent.

The results show that Sanchez narrowly secured the second place in April's first-round vote. The month-long count has led to allegations of fraud.

After more than a month recounting some ballots, the vote count finally reached 100 percent.

Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of late former President Alberto Fujimori, leads the race as she seeks the presidency for the fourth time in Peru.

She will face Roberto Sanchez, a congressman, who has the backing of the jailed former leftist president Pedro Castillo who won the 2021 presidential election.

Under Peruvian electoral law, a presidential candidate must win more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round to be elected. If no candidate reaches the threshold, the top two candidates advance to a second round. The runoff is scheduled for June 7, with the candidate receiving the most votes elected president.

Peru held presidential and legislative elections on April 12 to choose a new president, vice presidents, members of both chambers of Congress, and representatives to the Andean Parliament, for a term running until 2031.

Fujimori, 50, supports a pro-market, investment-focused agenda and tough measures against crime.

Sanchez, 57, advocates changes to Peru's development model and a stronger role of the state in the economy. On security, he has called for addressing crime through governance reforms and social policy.

Perú celebrará una segunda vuelta de la elección presidencial luego de que ningún candidato obtuviera más del 50 por ciento de los votos en las elecciones del 12 de abril, según los resultados publicados el viernes por la Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales del país.

Con el 100 por ciento de los votos escrutados, Keiko Fujimori, del partido de derecha Fuerza Popular, lideró el escrutinio con el 17,18 por ciento de los votos, seguida por Roberto Sánchez, del partido de izquierda Juntos por el Perú, con el 12,03 por ciento. Rafael López Aliaga, del partido de extrema derecha Renovación Popular, se ubicaba en tercer lugar con el 11,9 por ciento.

Los resultados muestran que Sánchez obtuvo el segundo lugar por un estrecho margen en la primera vuelta de abril. El conteo, que se extendió por un mes, generó acusaciones de fraude. Tras más de un mes de recuento de algunos votos, el escrutinio finalmente cumplió el 100 por ciento.

Keiko Fujimori, hija del fallecido expresidente Alberto Fujimori, lidera la contienda en su búsqueda de la presidencia por cuarta vez en Perú. Se enfrentará a Roberto Sánchez, diputado, quien cuenta con el respaldo del expresidente izquierdista Pedro Castillo, actualmente encarcelado y ganador de las elecciones presidenciales de 2021.

Según la ley electoral peruana, un candidato presidencial debe obtener más del 50 por ciento de los votos en la primera vuelta para ser elegido. Si ningún candidato alcanza este umbral, los dos candidatos más votados pasan a una segunda vuelta.

La segunda vuelta está programada para el 7 de junio, y el candidato con mayor número de votos resultará elegido presidente.

El 12 de abril, Perú celebró elecciones presidenciales y legislativas para elegir un nuevo presidente, vicepresidentes, miembros de ambas cámaras del Congreso y representantes al Parlamento Andino, para un mandato que se extenderá hasta 2031.

Fujimori, de 50 años, apoya una agenda promercado, centrada en la inversión y medidas enérgicas contra la delincuencia. Sánchez, de 57 años, aboga por cambios en el modelo de desarrollo de Perú y un mayor protagonismo del Estado en la economía. En materia de seguridad, ha propuesto abordar la delincuencia mediante reformas de gobernanza y políticas sociales.
