"World trade is a two-way choice and there is no such thing as forced buying or selling. The essence of China-EU economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. China has never deliberately sought a trade surplus with Europe. The EU side should take an all-round and objective view of the China-EU economic and trade relations, and uphold its commitments to free trade. China is closely monitoring the EU's moves and will take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests."

The European Union (EU) should view its economic and trade relations with China from an all-round and objective perspective, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.

Mao's remarks came in response to a question about recent comments from EU officials suggesting the bloc must balance its trade with China.

China is closely monitoring the EU's moves and will take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," Mao said.
