China is deeply concerned over the situation in Iran, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.
Mao made the remarks in response to a question about the United States and Iran having launched strikes against each other again in the past few days.
"China is deeply concerned about the current situation. The renewed warfare serves no one's interest. We hope relevant parties can cherish the opportunities of peace, honor ceasefire commitment and keep momentum of negotiation, stick to dispute settlement through political and diplomatic means, and realize a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire at an early date and create necessary conditions for the restoration of peace and tranquility in the Middle East and Gulf region," said Mao.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Wednesday it has fired missiles and drones at a vessel linked to the United States and Israel and two U.S. bases in the region in response to attacks by the United States on an Iranian oil tanker and southern Qeshm Island.
