Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with the candidate for the next United Nations Secretary-General, Michelle Bachelet, in Beijing on Wednesday.

Han said that the United Nations embodies the aspirations of people across the world for lasting peace and common prosperity.

President Xi Jinping put forward the concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity and four global initiatives -- the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative -- which are consistent with the spirit of the UN Charter, he said.

China is willing to work with all parties to continue to firmly support the United Nations in playing a core role and promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system, he added.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will earnestly fulfill its responsibilities, continue to take an impartial stance, safeguard the authority of the United Nations, and protect the common interests of the Global South, Han said.

Bachelet said she highly appreciates China's long-term and firm commitment to promoting multilateralism and the cause of the United Nations, supporting the balanced advancement of the three pillars of the United Nations -- peace and security, development, and human rights, adhering to the membership-led principle, and supporting the United Nations in further improving quality and efficiency through reform.

Bachelet said she is willing to work with the Chinese side to uphold the fundamental original aspiration and purpose of the United Nations and jointly strengthen its role.
