Mexico City became the global epicenter of football as co-host Mexico beat nine-man South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday.

Thousands of fans experienced a day marked by excitement and pride of hosting a World Cup once again.

From the early hours, the Mexican capital turned into a football party. Dressed in green, white, and red, fans took to the streets and squares to witness the historic match.

"I came to the Zocalo, but we couldn't get in. There were too many people, but we made it to this bar. We're very happy here watching Mexico's victory," said Roberto Paredes, a Mexican fan.

Restaurants and street stalls welcomed families, groups of friends, and foreign visitors who mingled amid flags, chants, and tricolor jerseys. Toward halftime, fans began to move toward the Angel of Independence, the iconic monument where victories are celebrated.

For many Mexicans, the day represented much more than a match: it was an opportunity to be part of a historic event and show the world their passion for football. The World Cup opening strengthened the bond between the city and one of the most iconic venues in international sport.

The celebration spread to various parts of the capital. Despite the rain, fans celebrated the 2-0 victory against South Africa, hoping the winning streak will continue in the upcoming matches.

Mexican tourists and fans will now focus their attention on Guadalajara, Jalisco, where the Mexican national team will face the Republic of Korea in the coming days.

La Ciudad de México se convirtió en el epicentro del fútbol mundial con el partido inaugural del Mundial 2026 entre México y Sudáfrica. Miles de aficionados vivieron una jornada marcada por la emoción y el orgullo de albergar por tercera ocasión una Copa del Mundo.

Desde temprano, en las calles y plazas se veían a multitudes vestidas de los colores de la bandera mexicana: verde, blanco y rojo.

“Vine al Zócalo, pero no pudimos entrar, había mucha gente, pero llegamos a este bar. Aquí estamos muy contentos viendo el triunfo de México”, manifestó Roberto Paredes, un aficionado mexicano.

En los restaurantes y puestos callejeros, las familias, grupos de amigos y visitantes extranjeros también se llenó de algarabía durante la inauguración y el primer tiempo del partido. Entre banderas y cánticos, y una marea de camisetas tricolores se celebró el primer gol de la selección mexicana, conocida como "El Tri".

Para el segundo tiempo, multitudes de aficionados, prediciendo el triunfo, se dirigieron hacia el monumento del Ángel de la Independencia para celebrar.

Para los fanáticos, la celebración del Mundial en México es una oportunidad de mostrar al mundo no solo su pasión por el fútbol sino también su cultura.

La celebración se extendió por distintos puntos de la capital. A pesar de las lluvias, los aficionados festejaron el triunfo de "El Tri" de 2-0, con la esperanza de que sea el inicio de una racha ganadora.

Turistas y aficionados mexicanos ahora ponen sus ojos en la ciudad de Guadalajara, en el estado de Jalisco, donde la selección mexicana enfrentará a la República de Corea el 18 de junio.
