At least 61 people were killed and 1,403 others injured as of Sunday morning after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao, the Philippines, on June 8, according to a report released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
The report said that 40 people remain missing, and the number of people affected by the disaster has exceeded 720,000.
It also showed that 54,000 houses and 725 infrastructure facilities were damaged, with total losses exceeding 1 billion pesos (about 16.46 million U.S. dollars). In addition, 13 towns and cities have declared a state of disaster.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the tectonic earthquake occurred at 7:37 local time at a depth of 33 km, with the epicenter 32 km southwest of the coast of Maasim town in Sarangani Province on Mindanao Island.
