Iran's Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said that Iran has no obligation to buy agricultural products from the United States according to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) it signed with the U.S., the Tasnim News Agency reported on Monday.

After the U.S. and Iran held high-level talks at Switzerland's Burgenstock resort, U.S. Vice President JD Vance told reporters on Monday that if the U.S. agreed to unfreeze Iranian assets, the funds could be used to purchase American soybeans, corn and wheat.

Hemmati said the first sum of 6 billion U.S. dollars will be used to buy basic commodities and medicine in accordance with the deal that Iran and the U.S. reached in 2023.

He also said Iran does not rule out purchases from the U.S. if its products are more appropriate in both price and quality.

On Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran's 6 million of U.S. dollars in Qatar will be unfrozen.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said all parties have agreed to initiate the previously signed arrangements for unfreezing funds. The funds consist of two sums, each 6 billion dollars, and the unfreezing arrangements have been immediately put into implementation.

In August 2023, Iran and the U.S. reached a prisoner exchange agreement that includes unfreezing Iranian assets. According to the agreement, the U.S. unfroze 6 billion U.S. dollars of Iranian oil export earnings from South Korean banks and transferred them to Iranian accounts in Qatari banks. The funds, supervised by Qatar, should be used to purchase humanitarian supplies needed by Iran.
