"When they produce the solar module here, the cost is absolutely higher than the Chinese solar modules, so they need the local support from the government. When we export the solar cell, it's a key raw material for the solar panel, so if they increase the capacity, that means they would import more solar cells here to produce the local solar panels here."

"The main challenges we see, not only in Suntech, but most of the solar companies, are policy-based. If the European union actually viewed the storage technology as they viewed the solar technology 20 years ago, the expansion would be much faster and we would have much more rigid and secure grids with multiple layers of redundant systems. However, the policy has not shifted yet, which creates great concern for investors."

Chinese solar firms expressed confidence they can play a positive role in Europe's green transition while attending the ongoing Intersolar Europe 2026, a major solar industry expo that opened on Tuesday in Munich, Germany.

In recent years, China has come to produce the vast majority of the world's solar panels and key photovoltaic components.

Investment, massive manufacturing scale and highly competitive pricing have allowed Chinese companies to become the leading suppliers to markets around the world, including Europe.

While low-cost imports have helped speed up Europe's green transition, some European manufacturers said they have struggled to compete. Chinese companies at the expo stated that cost differences and supportive policies are key factors shaping the European market.

"When they produce the solar module here, the cost is absolutely higher than the Chinese solar modules, so they need the local support from the government. When we export the solar cell, it's a key raw material for the solar panel, so if they increase the capacity, that means they would import more solar cells here to produce the local solar panels here," said Evelyn Tao, senior sales manager of Yingfa, a global leader in photovoltaic cell manufacturing.

Others said that European regulatory frameworks have not kept pace with the next phase of the energy transition, storage and grid stability.

However, the policy has not shifted yet, which creates great concern for investors," said Alexander Romanos, regional director of Suntech Power China.

Some industry leaders at the expo said the challenge is no longer simply installing solar panels, but building a resilient energy system around them to meet growing demand. As Europe races to meet its climate and energy goals, Chinese expertise and manufacturing remain central to that transition.

The expo will run through Thursday.
