2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Guo Jiakun, spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"China has on many occasions made its solemn position clear, and we would like to reiterate hereby that China has an exclusive economic zone and a continental shelf in the waters east of the Taiwan Island. The activities carried out by relevant Chinese authorities in the waters east of the Taiwan Island are completely legitimate and beyond reproach. By bypassing China and launching the so-called maritime delimitation negotiations, Japan and the Philippines have seriously violated international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as the basic norms governing international relations. Their actions have gravely infringed upon China's maritime rights and interests, which China will never tolerate."
